Even though he is still in the prime of this MLB career, Shohei Ohtani's abilities on the field have taken on an almost mythical status among fans and experts. The Los Angeles Dodgers superstar has continued to defy the expectations laid out for him and is on the verge of becoming the first designated hitter to secure an MVP Award, which would be the third of his career.
It goes without saying that every time Shohei Ohtani steps up to the plate, he is much watch television. On Tuesday night, the Dodgers kingpin launched his 37th home run of the year which solidifies his lead in the National League by a pair over Atlanta Braves slugger Marcell Ozuna.
"Tyler Glasnow describing his first impression of Shohei Ohtani running: “Oh shit that guy’s fast. And he’s very big” - @TalkinBaseball_
It's not only fans and analysts who are in awe of Ohtani, but his very own teammate Tyler Glasnow. The veteran pitcher discussed all the ways that Ohtani continues to impress not only him but the rest of his teammates as well.
"Oh shit, that guy's fast. And he's very big," Glasnow said of his first impression of the Japanese star during an interview on The Chris Rose Rotation.
Glasnow said that Ohtani's speed and baserunning abilities is something that continues to impress him given the two-way superstar's size. At 6-foot-4, Ohtani is no small man, which makes his speed on the basepaths even more special. Glasnow explained that it is not common to see players of his stature so shifty on bases:
"The ability to get from first to second is impressive because most tall guys aren't like that."
Ohtani's speed has not only surprised Tyler Glasnow but the rest of his opponents throughout his career. Over his seven seasons in the majors, Ohtani has racked up 119 stolen bases and does not appear to be slowing down any time soon.
Shohei Ohtani and Tyler Glasnow have both been spectacular in their debut seasons with the Dodgers
It was an historic offseason for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who seemingly were involved in every major trade or free agent signing. The team put the league on notice by signing Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Teoscar Hernandez, while also trading for Glasnow.
Both Glasnow and Ohtani have been major contributors to the Dodgers' success this season and will be looking to help secure their first World Series titles. Following the high-profile moves, the pressure to succeed was evident, however, with both Shohei Ohtani and Glasnow being named All-Star this year, it's clear that they are ready to prove any haters wrong.
