New York Mets star Pete Alonso was pulled from Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers after being struck in the hand by a James Paxton pitch in the first inning. In a bleak season for the New York side, their first baseman remains one of their most crucial players, and any injury to him would be a major concern.

Speaking to the media after the game, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza issued an update on the injury, saying that the X-rays came back "normal" while they await the results of a CT scan.

Pete Alonso was selected by the New York Mets in the 2016 MLB draft and went on to make his major league debut with them in 2019, winning the Rookie of the Year award that season. He has since grown into a central player for the franchise, establishing himself as one of the best players in the country.

Despite all his achievements in the past, Alonso and the Mets have had a terrible start to the MLB season this year, and their numbers reflect it. In 55 games this season, the infielder has an average of .231 with 12 home runs and 26 RBIs so far. Given his high standards, this is a career low for Alonso.

Nonetheless, he remains a crucial part of the Mets team and they will be hoping that his injury is not serious. The team's staff are awaiting the CT scan results due tomorrow, which will confirm whether Alonso has suffered a fracture.

Mets dealt double blow as Edwin Diaz is placed in IL amidst Pete Alonso's injury scare

It was a tough day for both New York Mets fans and players as the team was swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers and left with two injury crucial concerns. While the full extent of Pete Alonso's injury after a hit-by-pitch remains uncertain, the Mets announced that closer Edwin Diaz has been added to the 15-day IL due to a shoulder impingement.

As it stands, things could not be any worse for the Mets (22-33) in the MLB. With the growing frustrations among fans that is now creeping into the clubhouse, it remains to be seen what actions may be taken to remedy the situation in the near future.

The Mets host the Arizona Diamondbacks next in a three-game series at Citi Field, beginning on Thursday.
