As the MLB trade deadline draws closer, talks are hovering around the league, including a potential move by the New York Mets for Pete Alonso. The 29-year-old All-Star signed a $20.5 million contract, avoiding arbitration and is set to become a free agent after this season unless the Mets offer him an extension deal.
However, there's high speculation that the Mets may keep Alonso with a multi-year agreement, like they tried last year. It came to public attention for the first time that the Mets offered Alonso a seven-year, $158 million last June.
“An offer was made through his then agency, Apex Baseball, at seven years for $158 million.
"The Mets baseball operations, at that point led by GM Billy Eppler, were trying to do a multi-year deal with Alonso that would include his final arbitration season in 2024 then six more years,” Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported.
However, Pete Alosnto’s then-agent, Adam Karon, forbade him to discuss the matter publicly. According to Sherman, both parties didn’t reach an agreement then. The club considered a trade talk, strongly with the Chicago Cubs, which never happened.
This year he hired Scott Boras in search of a better deal, and the Super agent Boras hopes to get a good offer for Pete Alonso.
“The market for consistent 40-homer, durable, infield-capable, true middle-of-the-lineup sluggers is the question,” Boras said, via New York Post.
“Note there are none available in free agency and none coming [in the next few years]. Plus, he’s New York proven, which is an unanswered question for many others — not Pete. It’s elite-level durability and production at a prime age [29], which is simply something most MLB teams do not possess. They will covet the opportunity to have free-agent access to such talent.”
Pete Alonso has 23 RBIs, 27 runs and 10 home runs in 44 games for the Big Apple. This season, he has a stat line of .226/.307/.458 and a .765 OPS. In his last five games, Alonso went 5-for-20 with five runs, a single RBI and a home run.
Pete Alonso loves being a Mets
As the Mets are silent on extension talks this year, a potential trade move is not out of the grid yet. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported a trade talk between the New York Mets and Milwaukee Brewers which involves Pete Alonso.
Tim Healey of Newsday Sports reported Alonso’s response after learning about Rosenthal’s report, and he cleared his intention to stay with the Mets.
"I love being a Met. I love representing the city of New York the best way I possibly can. I love everybody in this clubhouse. Being a Met, it’s the only thing I know," Alonso said.
Amid the rumors, Steve Cohen, the Mets owner, and David Strens, Mets head of baseball operations, are interested in keeping him on the team. However, another All-Star Juan Soto, from the New York Yankees, is getting high attention as a possible free agent.
If Soto decides to enter free agency, the Mets will no doubt become one of his prime bidders, which holds doubts about Pete Alonso’s future with the club.
