Pete Alonso's three-run go-ahead home run in the bottom of the ninth inning in Game 3 of the wild card series against the Milwaukee Brewers ensured Citi Field will see more games this October. However, a new revelation, reported by Mets writer Anthony DiComo, turned out to be a good omen for the Mets.
According to DiComo, the New York Mets first baseman picked up a pumpkin at a Wisconsin pumpkin patch this week. With the Mets moving ahead to the NLDS, it's become their good-luck charm.
Upon learning this, Mets fans had all the more reason to celebrate during the Halloween season.
"Pumpkin Power," one fan wrote.
"Protect it at all costs," another commented.
"1-0 in the Pumpkin era," another added.
One fan had the best reaction:
"2024 Mets collecting good luck charms like they are infinity stones."
"Perfect addition to his team's decorated jack-o-lantern collection," one fan wrote.
"Nothing says playoff vibes like a lucky pumpkin! 🍀🎃 Let’s go Mets!" another added.
Pete Alonso's "special moment" is the perfect homecoming for Mets
With the Mets down 2-0, a 3-1 changeup from Devin Williams was the pitch Pete Alonso made sure to get into the stands of American Family Field. Jesse Winker added an insurance run to take the Mets up 4-2, and David Peterson protected the lead.
"I was just looking for something out over the plate," Alonso said after the win. "I just really wanted to hit something hard through the big part of the field. I'm really happy that I capitalized, really happy that I capitalized. It's a really special moment."
Before that home run, Alonso was 1-11 coming into this at-bat, and many felt the Mets' front office was right to not extend him beyond this season.
However, after Alonso's clutch home run, there's a lot of upside. If the Mets' surprise run continues, it'll only build his case further for Steve Cohen & Co. to sign him back.
