The San Francisco Giants are welcoming back a familiar face, Darin Ruf. The two sides agreed to a minor league deal. Ruf spent 2020 to 2022 with the Giants.
He was recently designated for assignment by the New York Mets last week as he struggled heavily in New York. He hit .152/.216/.197 with zero home runs with the Mets.
Ruf was dealing with some wrist issues that seemed to affect him at the plate. His struggles at the plate and the Mets prioritizing Tim Locastro's speed off the bench were why the team DFA'd him.
The Giants will only owe Ruf a prorated minimum salary. If he can find his swing in the San Francisco organization again, the Giants will have gotten a steal.
"Why would we want him back?? Literally the worst defensive player in baseball and can't hit anymore," one fan tweeted.
"Oh boy," another fan tweeted.
San Francisco Giants fans aren't too thrilled to see Ruf on his way back. They think he's past his prime and won't be much help to the team, even on a minor-league deal.
The Giants bringing Ruf back is a low-risk move for them. The New York Mets are on the hook for his $3 million salary. Even if he can't find his swing again, the Giants aren't risking much.
The San Francisco Giants offense has been impressive so far
While the San Francisco Giants started off the season failing to score runs, they've made up for it. They're coming off a three-game series against the Chicago White Sox, where they scored a combined 31 runs. In Game One of that series, they hit seven home runs.
This offensive surge is something that fans can't overlook. The Giants have guys who can produce runs at any point in their lineup. If they can find consistency in producing even a portion of the offense they showed the White Sox for the rest of the year, they'll be dangerous.
It will be important for players like Michael Conforto and Joc Pederson to be consistent all year. They're the duo that the team looks to in the middle of the order to get something going.
The Giants face the Kansas City Royals for two games over the weekend before they face the Los Angeles Dodgers. If they can put it on the Dodgers, they'll send a message to the rest of the division. It will be interesting to see how far the Giants can go this season.
