Andy Pages shares mom's heartwarming reaction to Dodgers call-up

23-year-old Cuban Andy Pages made his much-awaited big-league debut with the mighty Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday. Much to the delight of the fans and Dodgers dugout, he registered his maiden big league hit with his first swing of the bat and also managed to score his maiden MLB run in the same inning.

While his debut was startling, Andy Pages reflected on his first MLB base hit after the game, saying:

"I was really happy. I mostly just felt like I got the first hit in the Major Leagues out of the way, and now I can focus on what’s to come."

Next, Pages reflected upon what his mother, Juana Maria, who is still living in Cuba, did after getting to know her son's big league debut with the Dodgers. Andy said:

"She started waking up everyone that lives in our neighborhood. Obviously she did cry, but I told her to stay calm because we’re finally in the big leagues, which is where she’s always wanted me to be."

Andy Pages had defected to the USA and signed a $300,000 contract with the LA Dodgers in 2018. He was LA's number-three prospect and is a highly sought-after player, which is why his hard work and terrific minor league career earned him the big league nod.

LA Dodgers were excited to call up Andy Pages to the big leagues

As Andy Pages took to the field in LA Dodgers blue at Dodger Stadium, the crowd applauded the young Cuban's efforts to make it to the big leagues. Not just the fans, but LA's players and manager, voiced their praise for the startling OF.

"I’m just happy for him, because being in the outfield with him last year, he’s just a really good dude, really good kid." - Mookie Betts

Manager Dave Roberts said:

"What he adds is, he’s a complete ballplayer. Very heady baseball player. He lives and breathes baseball. In the box, he’s a good hitter. We’re really excited."

Pages was given the call-up after OF Jason Heyward was sent on the IL and the other OF Chris Taylor was struggling at the plate with his at-bats.
