With a total of 89 home runs this season, the Pittsburgh Pirates rank sixteenth in the league in the category. However, despite the team's highly average propensity for long ones this year, the balls were flying out of the ballpark at a truly astonishing clip on Friday night.
Against the Mets on Friday, Pittsburgh Pirates hitters connected for seven home runs, or 8% of their season's total. The veritable hit show prompted the staff at PNC Park to display a message on the scoreboard telling fans that after firing off a display for each bomb, they eventually ran out of fireworks.

After falling behind the New York Mets 2-0 by the fourth inning, Pirates batters turned it on. Rowdy Tellez and Jack Suwinski put forth a solo bomb each in the fourth frame before Bryan Reynolds chipped in.
Reynolds hit a two-run homer in the fifth before his Grand Slam in the seventh. Michael Taylor and Yasmani Grandal would hit a solo shot each before Tellez capped it off with another Grand Slam in the eighth for good measure.

The seven bombs tied a franchise record, which was last completed against the Seattle Mariners in May 2023. While the Pirates' hitters were firing on all cylinders to score all fourteen of their runs via a home run, rookie Paul Skenes was dealing. In his tenth start of the season, the 22-year-old went seven innings of two-run ball, striking out eight in the process to improve his record to 5-0.
Pittsburgh Pirates energized by offensive firestorm
Although the Pittsburgh Pirates remain nine games behind the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central, a night such as the performance on Friday is certainly encouraging. As Bryan Reynolds, who logged two home runs and six RBIs on the night, claimed to MLB.com:
“It’s a great offensive game for us, I think we can build off it and keep it rolling, just keep going strong for the rest of the year.”
Playing behind one of the best young pitchers in the game, it looks like the Pirates can continue to give their fans reasons to keep cheering for them.
