The St. Louis Cardinals have been looking to offload Nolan Arenado from their payroll as they rebuild this offseason. However, the superstar third baseman rejected a trade move to the Houston Astros last month, and there hasn't been subsequent interest among teams to acquire him.

Eminent baseball writer Derrick Goold believes that Nolan Arenado might follow the same path St. Louis Cardinals ace Sonny Gray and their catcher Willson Contreras took after they exercised a no-trade clause to block a move out of the team. He feels that Arenado, like Gray and Contreras, could eventually decide to see out the remainder of his contract with the Cardinals.

Goold, who covers the Cardinals for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, offered his take on the failed trade move for Nolan Arenado on the Baseball Isn't Boring podcast on Sunday.

"It's also possible that Nolan says, "Look, it's not happening. I'm staying a Cardinal." Sonny Gray has said that. Willson Contreras has said that. They both have no-trade clauses, and when the Cardinals talked to them about it, "Hey, this is the direction that we're going to go." They're like, "Cool, we want to be a part of that. We want to stick around." For multiple reasons; different reasons for each guy.
"When you have two guys saying, "No, no. I'd like to stay. I want to see this through. I want to be a part of this." They like this city. They like playing at this ballpark. They like wearing the uniform. They feel they got unfinished business. There's some that here in play with Nolan."

Arenado has three years remaining on his contract and is owed $74 million.

Derrick Goold says Cardinals still looking to offload Sonny Gray & Willson Contreras along with Nolan Arenado

During the aforementioned podcast, Goold said that the St. Louis Cardinals don't seem to be actively pursuing a trade deal to ship out Nolan Arenado. Nevertheless, Goold believes the Cardinals could still be keen to listen to offers from other teams, as well as for Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras.

"The Cardinals didn't really pursue trades," Goold said. "They were open, entering the season, to the possibility they'd have to trade all these guys. Or they'd seek to either find them a place with a contender. Or to alleviate salary, which the Cardinals still want to do. All that stuff is in play here."

The Cardinals missed out on the postseason after an 83-79 campaign in 2024 to finish third in the National League Central.
