Nestor Cortes has been ruled out of the WBC '23

Nestor Cortes has been ruled out of the World Baseball Classic 2023 after tweaking his hamstring, according to a report by Ken Rosenthal from The Athletic. Nestor was expected to start at least two games for Team USA in the tournament, which looks highly unlikely now. Cortes, a starter for the New York Yankees, is anxiously awaiting the full diagnosis of the injury.

"Yankees LHP Nestor Cortes Jr. out of World Baseball Classic, sources tell TheAthletic. Was set to pitch for Team USA, but recently tweaked hamstring. Leaves C Kyle Higashioka (USA), 2B Gleyber Torres (Venezuela) and RH Jonathan Loáisiga (Nicaragua) as only Yankees in tournament," Ken Rosenthal tweeted.

Cortes' injury is unknown, but if it is a typical hamstring strain, there is definitely cause for optimism that he will be ready to play on Opening Day more than six weeks from now. Fans took to Twitter to voice their surprising opinions over the breaking news.

"It’s better this way. We don’t want any arm issues," @SamKatzap tweeted.

Cortes has a decent opportunity to start one of the Yankees' games against the San Francisco Giants, which are at Yankee Stadium from March 30 through April 2. A start against the Phillies at home on April 3 is also a possibility.

Nestor Cortes and the Yankees will look to play this one out wisely and keep him from playing a part at the World Baseball Classic

It's likely just a matter of playing it safe, with Nestor Cortes and the Yankees keeping him in exhibition games and keeping him out of the World Baseball Classic as he recovers from a strained hamstring.

Alongside ace Gerrit Cole, seasoned Carlos Rodon, and the always intriguing Luis Severino, the 28-year-old All-Star is anticipated to play a significant role in the rotation. The Yankees' hope is that Cortes returns soon.

"Nestor Cortes says he has a low Grade 2 hamstring strain. Plan as of now is no throwing off a mound for a few weeks. He is throwing, however. Not ruling out opening week readiness," Andy Martino tweeted.

Last season, while pitching in Game 4 of the ALCS, Nestor Cortes suffered a groin injury, which sent him to a strict rehab facility. The 2022 season marked Cortes' greatest season to date. He made 28 starts and finished 12-4 with a 2.44 ERA.

He attributes his outstanding campaign to the strength and conditioning department of the Yankees, but it's sad for Team USA that he won't be playing any further part in the World Baseball Classic.
