Former World Series champion and baseball legend Willie Mays died at the age of 93, his former team, the San Francisco Giants, announced on Tuesday. Among the many who have paid tribute to the 24-time All-Star's legacy, Barry Bonds, another Giants legend, shared a heartfelt message through his social media post.

Bonds shared a photo of him and Mays and said one final goodbye to his "Godfather."

"I am beyond devastated and overcome with emotion. 💔 I have no words to describe what you mean to me- you helped shape me to be who I am today. Thank you for being my Godfather and always being there. Give my dad a hug for me. Rest in peace Willie, I love you forever. #SayHey ⚾️," Bonds wrote in the caption.

Though Bonds and Mays never played together, both had the best interests of the Giants in mind. Mays won the World Series for the Giants in 1954, while Bonds was a five-time NL MVP during his stint with the Giants.

Barry Bonds' father, Bobby Bonds, shared the locker room with Willie Mays as teammates at the Giants from 1968 to 1972 and made Mays Barry's godfather. Mays had an inspiring influence on Bonds, right from a young age.

MLB mourns the loss of Willie Mays, commissioner Rob Manfred expressed his condolences

The MLB community was shocked to learn when news floated that Mays had died for reasons yet to be known. While mourning Willie Mays' death, Manfred listed his accomplishments and the inspiring legacy he left behind.

"All of Major League Baseball is in mourning today as we are gathered at the very ballpark where a career and a legacy like no other began," Manfred said in a statement Tuesday evening.
"Willie Mays took his all-around brilliance from the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League to the historic Giants franchise. From coast to coast in New York and San Francisco, Willie inspired generations of players and fans as the game grew and truly earned its place as our National Pastime."

Willie Mays was scheduled to be present at MLB's oldest professional ballpark, Rickwood Field, this Thursday for the Negro League Tribute Game. However, on Saturday, due to health reasons, Mays stated that he wouldn't be able to make it to Birmingham for the occasion but said he would be enjoying it in the Bay Area.
