Gleyber Torres and the New York Yankees lost 9-7 against the New York Mets in the opening game of their Subway Series at Citi Field. The Tuesday night game was a struggle, especially for Torres, who went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts.
Torres's strikeout in the first inning cost him a chance to score when the bases were loaded with nobody out. In the eighth inning, hit the ball, and it was fielded by shortstop Francisco Lindor, who threw it to first baseman Pete Alonso, getting Torres out at first base.
But perhaps Torres's biggest miscue was not running hard on the final out of the eighth. While discussing his decision to bench Torres, Yankees manager Aaron Boone brought up that particular play as a factor in why he made the move at second base.
"That certainly got my attention," he said about Torres' eighth inning play, per Sports Illustrated.
Torres blamed his groin tightness issues for not running hard on the final out. However, Aaron Boone doesn’t believe that the injury is a major issue.
"No, he's good. He came out with a little bit of a groin issue [or] hip, but it's nothing that's significant."
The Yankees manager revealed that he’s giving Gleyber Torres some days off to rest both mentally and physically.
"I just felt like he needs it," Boone said (via SI.com). "I might give him a couple days here, just to kinda reset. I just think he's too important, and a guy that I'm confident will get going, but it's been a grind, it's been a struggle, and I think he's feeling that a little bit."
In Torres' place, Oswaldo Cabrera was placed at second base for Wednesday night's game against the New York Mets which ended with a terrible 12-2 loss for the Bronx Bombers.
Aaron Boone says Gleyber Torres ‘respects’ his decision to bench him
Gleyber Torres has had a tough season, with a batting average of just .215, an on-base percentage of .294, and a slugging percentage of .333. He has only hit seven home runs and 29 RBIs in 80 games.
Recently, he's been struggling even more, with just two hits in his last 36 at-bats. When asked how Torres responded to the news of being removed from the lineup, Yankees skipper Aaron Boone said:
“I talked to him last night. And then I called him this morning, when I decided I was going to have him out of the lineup and then I saw him here. I think he respects the decision.”
Gleyber Torres inked a one-year, $14,200,000 contract with the New York Yankees and will be a free agent after the 2024 season.
