After losing their last three series in a row, the New York Yankees started a new two-game series with the New York Mets at Citi Field. The Tuesday night game saw the Yankees miss a big opportunity from the start.
In the first inning, Anthony Volpe hit a single to Mets right fielder Tyrone Taylor reaching first base. Shortly after Juan Soto walked, allowing Volpe to reach second. Another walk from Aaron Judge loaded the bases for the Yankees.
However, the Bronx Bombers were unable to capitalize on this opportunity to score runs, as Gleyber Torres and Alex Verdugo both struck out swinging against David Peterson. J.D. Davis went 2-for-3 but was called out on strikes by Peterson.
Yankees fans took to X/Twitter to react to the missed opportunity:
“They never fail to embarrass themselves… I’d walk Judge and Soto every time. The rest of the lineup behind them is trash,” a fan said.
“Terrible,” another fan said.
“Cannot believe I don’t see a run on the board,” another fan wrote.
Several other fans continued to share their reactions, with many blaming Gleyber Torres:
“It’s all Gleyber’s fault. Same thing as Sunday night at Fenway Park. Striking out with the bases loaded and no outs. DO YOUR JOB,” a comment read.
“Boone bats gleyber 4th then plays a guy who hasn’t played in over a week. And people think he’s a good coach,” another comment read.
“Honestly, when I saw the lineup, I was like welp this is bound to happen,” a fan said.
Gleyber Torres returned to the Yankees' lineup on Saturday after leaving Thursday’s losing game against the Atlanta Braves early due to groin tightness. Torres underwent an MRI exam on Friday, which came back clean.
Yankees are struggling, trailing 9-1 in 6th inning against Mets
The New York Mets took an early 1-0 lead against the Yankees in the first inning on Tyrone Taylor’s single. Mark Vientos and Harrison Bader hit homers in the second inning, extending the score to 3-0.
Vientos then hit his second homer of the night in the fourth inning, adding another run for the Mets. Brandon Nimmo’s two-run homer in the same inning gave the Mets a commanding 6-0 lead.
The Bronx Bombers finally responded in the fifth inning when Soto hit a 423-foot moonshot to score a run. In the sixth inning, the Mets' offense added another two runs when Brandon Nimmo reached base on a fielder's choice and J.D. Martinez hit a double.
After Pete Alonso's sacrifice fly in the sixth inning, the score stood at 9-1. So far, the Yankees' offense has managed three hits on 20 at-bats, with one RBI, five walks and nine strikeouts.
