The Chicago White Sox might be coming off one of the worst seasons in MLB history. However, it has not prevented them from making a number of roster moves this offseason. After setting a new league record for the most losses in a single season by going 41-121 in 2024, it appears there is nowhere to go but up for Chicago.
The White Sox front office was at it again on Thursday by adding another notable veteran on a short-term deal. According to MLB.com's Scott Merkin, the club has reached an agreement with utilityman Josh Rojas on a one-year deal. While the financial side of the signing has not been revealed, the move reflects several others made by the team already this offseason.
The team has added a number of veterans on one-year deals, something that did not go unnoticed by fans on social media. After news broke that the White Sox sniped Josh Rojas away from the Chicago Cubs, who were reportedly interested in the infielder, fans shared their thoughts on the move, as well as the team's offseason as a whole, including GM Chris Getz.
"Getz definitely has a type," one fan said.
"Just what the Sox need another light hitting second baseman. They are cornering the market on these guys," another fan shared.
"We are cornering the market on low average low homer players," one more fan added.
After such a disastrous 2024 season, it's quite clear that the White Sox are in a full rebuilding phase, which makes sense why they would pursue someone like Josh Rojas.
Rojas could play all over the field thanks to his defensive abilities and be used as a trade chip when the deadline approaches. That being said, some fans still took shots at the team.
"They pivot from Sasaki. They got their guy!" a fan posted online.
"Will be traded at the deadline," another fan added.
"I’m not sure if should feel happy for Josh Rojas or feel sad for him. Chicago White Sox are a dumpster fire," one more fan posted.
Josh Rojas is the latest veteran to sign with the White Sox on a one-year deal
As previously mentioned, Chicago has been filling out their roster with a number of mid-to-low-tier veterans. Josh Rojas now joins Mike Tauchman, Bryse Wilson and Austin Slater as older players who landed one-year deals with Chicago ahead of the 2025 season.
Given the current state of Chicago's franchise and its championship timeline, it appears likely that the front office will look to flip them for a younger asset later in the season.
The team has been trading away nearly every veteran player in recent seasons, which could also result in Luis Robert Jr. and Andrew Vaughn potentially being the next names on the chopping block.
