Fans reacted as the Boston Red Sox signed right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler on Monday to a one-year, $21 million contract. They had added southpaw Garrett Crochet to their roster in a trade move from the Chicago White Sox last week. The Red Sox also have Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford and Brayan Bello in their starting rotation.

Walker Buehler was picked up by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the first round of the 2015 MLB Draft and spent his entire career with them since making his major league debut in 2017. He's a two-time All-Star and won his second World Series with the Dodgers this year but was declined a contract extension, which saw him become a free agent in the offseason.

MLB fans reacted on social media. Some feel the Red Sox are still not going to be a contender this year despite bringing in Walker Buehler and Garret Crochet. Others believe they need an ace like Corbin Burnes to lead their pitching staff.

On Instagram, fans posted their views about the Red Sox signing Buehler:

The fan comments continued.

"This is a great rotation for a team that's going to finish third in their division," one remarked.
"Good enough to not make the playoffs again," said another.
"Too bad they can't score any runs," one wrote.

The Red Sox had signed Garrett Crochet before acquiring Walker Buehler on Monday. Crochet had a breakthrough year with the Chicago White Sox after being promoted into a starting role.

Moreover, the young trio of Kutter Crawford, Brayan Bello and Tanner Houck made a solid start for the Red Sox rotation last season even though they fell off a bit toward the end.

Strong finish to rocky comeback season for Walker Buehler

Walker Buehler had missed the entire 2023 season after undergoing a second Tommy John surgery the previous year. He signed an $8.025 million deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers for 2024 in his final year of arbitration before making his comeback in May.

However, Buehler had to endure a difficult return without any consistency as he dropped in and out of the rotation. He eventually made 16 starts and posted just 75.1 innings, along with a 5.38 ERA and 1.553 WHIP. Nevertheless, he was included in the Dodgers' postseason roster, as their starting rotation was ravaged by injuries.

Buehler preserved his reputation as a big game pitcher by delivering six shutout innings in Game 3 of the World Series. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts also brought him out of the bullpen to close out Game 5 and seal the Fall Classic in their favor.
