The love affair between the New York Mets and Pete Alonso is definitely on the rocks, as the two parties have still not reached an agreement over his contract. Recently, team owner Steve Cohen launched a thinly veiled assault on the player and his agent, Scott Boras. Cohen has not been impressed by the nature of the negotiations as well as with the demands of Alonso and Boras.
MLB fans posted their reactions on social media to the latest development in the free agency of Pete Alonso. Most fans feel there is very little likelihood of the first baseman returning to the Mets after the comments from the team owner. Alonso had declined a seven-year, $156 million extension from the Mets in 2023.
The New York Mets held their annual fan fest, Amazin' Day, this Saturday as players and team executives personally interacted with the fans. Steve Cohen took the stage to field questions, and he cleared out the club's stance in their contract negotiations with Pete Alonso.
"We made a significant offer to Pete," Cohen stated. "He's entitled to explore his market. That's what he's doing. Personally, this has been an exhausting conversation and negotiation. I mean, [Juan] Soto was tough. This is worse. I don't like the structures that are being presented to us. It's highly asymmetric against us. And I feel strongly about it."
The fans voiced their thoughts on the matter on Reddit.
"This divorce about to get ugly," posted one fan.
"Should have learned from Freddie," wrote another fan.
"He should have taken the offer the Mets gave him," another fan added.
Fans also criticized super agent Scott Boras while others blamed Alonso for hiring him as his representative.
"It’s a shame that this is who Pete chose to represent him," one fan commented.
"He's responsible for everything Boras says and does," another fan said.
"Teams are more sophisticated than these basic stats and know what’s up," said another fan.
Alonso had hired Boras after he rejected the extension offer from the Mets a couple of years back.
Steve Cohen says the Mets are considering replacements for Pete Alonso
During his public interview on Amazin' Day, Steve Cohen indicated that the door is almost shut in terms of Pete Alonso returning to the New York Mets this season. Cohen said the team is now looking at other players to fill the vacant position even though they are still attempting to strike a deal with Alonso.
"I will never say no," Cohen said. "The possibility is always there. But the reality is we're moving forward. And as we continue to bring in players, the reality is it becomes harder to fit Pete into what is already an expensive group of players we have. That's where we are. And I'm being brutally honest."
Pete Alonso was picked up by the Mets in the 2016 MLB Draft, and he has spent his entire six-year MLB career with the team so far.
