On Wednesday, the Cleveland Guardians landed one of the top remaining relief pitchers on the open market. The American League contender agreed to a one-year, $7 million deal with veteran pitcher Paul Sewald, which reportedly includes a mutual option for the 2026 campaign.
The decision to sign Sewald is a solid, albeit, surprising one of the Cleveland Guardians. The veteran pitcher struggled a bit last season for the Arizona Diamondbacks, posting a 4.31 ERA with 16 saves over 39.2 innings of work. Despite his difficult 2024 season, the year prior, Sewald was excellent, setting a new career-high with 34 saves in 2023.
Following the team's announcement, Cleveland fans flocked to X to share their opinion. They pointed out that although Sewald has been a solid contributor throughout his career, he is not the superstar talent they have been seeking or even the position the team needs.
"Can’t believe we traded Josh Naylor just to sign Paul Sewald … unbelievable," another fan tweeted.
"Most importantly they have not added any bats," -one fan tweeted.
While some shared their thoughts on the team adding a reliever coming off a rough season, others pointed out how he looks in the photo shared by the Cleveland Guardians' social media team. Sewald looks significantly older than his actual age, something that did not go unnoticed by fans.
"Looks older than Vogt," -another fan tweeted.
"Why does the guy look 46 years old?" One fan tweeted.
Paul Sewald brings veteran experience to the Cleveland Guardians' elite bullpen
There is no denying that Paul Sewald struggled in 2024. However, if he can turn back the clock this upcoming season, he could be another valuable weapon for Cleveland out of the bullpen. Even though Sewald has had plenty of experience as a closer throughout his career, he will likely take on a lower-leverage role with his new team.
The Guardians have arguably the best closer in baseball already on the roster in the shape of Emmanuel Clase, while also having several talented arms in front of him. Cade Smith and Hunter Gaddis help round out one of the best bullpens in baseball, something that Sewald will only help make even stronger in 2025.
