Tigers President gives major update on new signing Gleyber Torres, Colt Keith and Spencer Torkelson’s roles

On Friday, it was announced that free agent slugger Gleyber Torres would be signing with the Detroit Tigers. The two sides agreed to a one-year, $15 million deal for the 2025 season.

Torres is coming off a season with the New York Yankees, during which he played in 154 games. He hit .257/.330/.378 with 15 home runs and 63 runs batted in.

He should be a great addition to Detroit's lineup, a lineup that showed some fight last season. According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Torres will be the club's everyday second baseman.

"Gleyber Torres will be the everyday first baseman, Colt Keith will now play first base, and 1B Spencer Torkelson's role has yet to be defined, Tigers GM Scott harris says" said Nightengale.

For Colt Keith, he will slide over and play first base moving forward. This leaves Spencer Torkelson as the odd man out. It will be interesting to see what the club decides to do with the former first-round draft pick.

Gleyber Torres needs to have a solid year with the Tigers in 2025

Gleyber Torres did not have the best first half of the 2024 season with the New York Yankees. He struggled to get things rolling but was able to make up for that with a solid second half.

Now, working on a one-year deal, Torres cannot afford a shaky first half. He must be ready to go when the season gets underway as he will be a free agent this next offseason.

If Torres can have a solid 2025 season with the Tigers, he could get the opportunity to sign a long-term deal. The slugger will likely seek this as it is much easier for professionals to be at their best when their future is certain.
