First baseman Nathaniel Lowe is heading to the East Coast to join the Washington Nationals for the 2025 season. After spending last season with the Texas Rangers, Lowe was traded to the Nationals in exchange for left-handed pitcher Robert Garcia on Sunday.
The Rangers made the move shortly after acquiring corner infielder Jake Burger from the Miami Marlins. The Marlins obtained Burger during the winter meetings in exchange for three minor-league prospects.
MLB Fans had mixed reactions to Nathaniel Lowe’s move to the Nationals:
“Vladdy Jr. going to the Rangers!!!” a fan said.
“That's like going from a Tesla to a Cyber truck,” another fan said.
“wtf are they doing,” another fan wrote.
Many other reactions continued with some celebrating the Nationals' strengthening roster:
“My boys are champs this year. Young, hungry & ready to prove they belong. #Nats25,” a comment reads.
“Everybody gettin ready too face the defending champs 😂 #Dodgers,” another comment reads.
“And there getting Ethan Holliday from the draft damn let the Nats cook,” someone wrote.
During the 2024 season with the Texas Rangers, Nathaniel Lowe batted .265 with 16 home runs, 69 RBIs, and a .762 OPS. He also ranked sixth in the American League with 71 walks. Lowe won a Gold Glove award during the Rangers' World Series-winning season in 2023.
In 2022, Lowe posted a .302 batting average and hit 27 home runs, earning a Silver Slugger award. Meanwhile, in the 2024 season, Robert Garcia recorded a 4.22 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP and 75 strikeouts over 59.2 innings pitched across 72 games.
Texas Rangers and Washington Nationals actively bolstering their roster this offseason
Robert Garcia is under team control till the 2029 season, while Nathaniel Lowe is two years away from hitting free agency. Both the Texas Rangers and the Washington Nationals are working to strengthen their rosters and improve their chances heading into the 2025 season.
Before adding Garcia, the Rangers signed free-agent left-handed pitcher Hoby Milner to a one-year contract worth $2.5 million. During the winter meetings, the club also signed right-handed pitcher Jacob Webb to a $1.25 million deal.
The Washington Nationals also made a good move last week by signing right-handed pitcher Michael Soroka to a $9 million contract for the 2025 season. The Nationals are coming off a 71-91 record in 2024, continuing their losing streak since winning the World Series in 2019.
Meanwhile, the Rangers, despite being the reigning World Series champions were unable to reach the playoffs this year.
