Michael Kay and John Flaherty are two of the best color commentators currently calling games in the MLB. However, during Friday afternoon's matchup between the New York Yankees and Chicago Cubs, the pair seemingly had their wires crossed. In the top of the seventh inning, Kay and Flaherty decided to use the opportunity to vent about one another.
During the live broadcast, fans could listen to John Flaherty and Michael Kay get into a dispute. According to Flaherty, Kay was not exactly talkative on the bus prior to the game, which the former decided to bring up during the broadcast.
While Michael Kay said he was not feeling well, the spat continued much to the surprise of fans who were watching the game between the Cubs and Yankees.
"What in the fuck were they thinking doing this live on air lol" one fan posted on Reddit
"Hard to believe Kay wasn't chatty since he loves to hear himself talk," another fan said.
"Very odd!! I thought they always got along good?? Who knew they didn’t?" one more added.
As the discussion continued, Flaherty mentioned how Kay is no longer going to away games that he is working. However, Kay quickly fired back, saying that executives reportedly told him that Flaherty preferred working with Ryan Ruocco. As the exchange progressed, an awkward silence took over the broadcast, something that did not go unnoticed by fans.
"Oh the awkward silence at the end was awesome," one fan said.
"This was painful to watch all the through," another added.
"Shouldn’t this conversation should been brought up before or after the game or even when they go to break? Lol," one more fan added.
It remains to be seen what happened between Michael Kay and John Flaherty behind the scenes after the game.
Michael Kay has been critical of one of the Yankees' underperforming pitchers
Kay, who is arguably the most recognizable voice during any New York Yankees broadcast, has never been shy about sharing his feelings. As the Bronx Bombers continue to push toward a postseason berth, Kay has been critical of a few underperforming players on the roster, specifically Clay Holmes.
It's been a mixed bag from Holmes this season. Despite racking up a number of saves throughout the year, the veteran reliever currently leads the league with 11 blown saves.
During his radio show, Kay said that he believes Holmes' issues are inside his head. He said, via nj.com:
"I don’t think you can close with Clay Holmes anymore. It was a terrible, terrible loss. You cannot close with this guy.”
While fans may not always agree with Kay, their thoughts on Holmes might match.
