New York Yankees center fielder Aaron Hicks was recently designated for assignment by the team. The term designated for assignment in MLB has often created interest and curiosity among baseball fans.

According to the glossary provided by the MLB, when a player is designated for assignment by a said team, he is immediately removed from his team's 40-man roster. At the same time, the player can either be traded to another club or be placed on outright waivers within seven days of the transaction.

Moreover, if another club claims the said player from the waivers, then he will be immediately added to the 40-man roster of that club. After that, he can either be sent to the minor leagues or be added to the 26-man roster for that club. However, if the player clears the period of waivers, then he can either be sent to the minor leagues or be released by the club.

The glossary further goes on to state that players who have more than three years of Major League service or have been outrighted can ask for free agency. Designated for assignment position is generally utilized by the clubs to make a port on their 40-man roster for either a newly acquired player through trade or free agency, calling up a minor leaguer, or activating an injured player off the 60-day injured list.
