St. Louis Cardinals prospect Jordan Walker may be the future of the franchise

While he may not be a household name, it may not be long before Jordan Walker becomes the most popular player in St. Louis. One of the top prospects in baseball, Walker has all the tools to become the next superstar outfielder in the MLB.

"115.9 MPH off the bat of Jordan Walker! His MLB-leading 17th hit and 7th XBH of the Spring," the St. Louis Cardinals tweeted.

At 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, Walker has the physical build to become one of the elite players in the MLB. In spring training, Walker has been one of the top stars, leading the MLB with 17 hits. He has maintained a .378 batting average, along with three home runs, nine RBIs and a stolen base.

The 20-year-old slugger from Stone Mountain, Georgia, has Cardinals fans buzzing. However, he is not on the 40-man roster, although a spot just opened up with the Detroit Tigers selecting right-hander Freddy Pacheco off waivers. That could fast-track Walker to the MLB.

"Jordan Walker's excellent spring continues. The @Cardinals' No. 1 prospect (MLB No. 4) now batting .386 with a 1.082 OPS," MLB Pipeline tweeted.

The St. Louis Cardinals outfield features several proven MLB talents, including Tyler O'Neill, Lars Nootbaar and Dylan Carlson. However, the introduction of the universal DH may open up a spot for Walker to work his way into the starting lineup.

Walker has more than proven himself ready for an opportunity with St. Louis at the MLB level. Through 201 games in the minor leagues, Walker has hit .310 with 33 home runs, 116 RBIs and 36 stolen bases. At every level, the top prospect has proven his five-tool abilities.

"#STLCards top prospect Jordan Walker shattered his bat on a grounder up the middle in his fifth plate appearance today. No word yet on whether it’s the same bat he’s used to hit everything in sight this spring. Walker, 20, has a .378 batting avg. & a .391 on-base percentage," John Denton tweeted.

Jordan Walker's road to the MLB

As a senior at Decatur High School, he hit .457 with four home runs and 15 RBIs over 16 games before the season was cut short due to COVID-19. He was selected as the Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year following the sensational season.

Walker was then selected 21st by the St. Louis Cardinals in the first round of the 2020 draft.
