The New York Yankees' closer position has not exactly been stable since 2013 when eventual unanimous Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera retired. It was Aroldis Chapman's job for a while, but he was either injured or demoted from the role more than a few times.
He's not even with the team anymore and for much of the 2022 season, the closer role was fluid. Will it be the same this year or is Brian Cashman targeting someone on or off the roster?
There are free agent options, some of whom have experience as a closer or in high leverage situations. These include:
- Archie Bradley
- Zack Britton
- Corey Knebel
- Will Harris
- Steve Cishek
Aaron Boone has hinted that the Yankees are looking into adding another pitcher, probably in the bullpen. Could it be one of the above to hold down the Yankees closer role?
Who is going to be the Yankees closer? Examining all options for 2023
The Yankee closer last year was largely Clay Holmes, but even he was shaky at times and may have been overused. New York does have a litany of high leverage relievers that could all close:
- Holmes
- Wandy Peralta
- Lou Trivino
- Michael King
- Jonathan Loaisiga
Any of these could be the closer and they will all more than likely record a few saves. Without a clear closer, the Yankees may opt to close by committee.
There's not much inherently special about pitching the last three outs of a game, so perhaps the Yankees could lead the charge in modifying how baseball teams operate in terms of bullpen roles.
