Alek Manoah of the Toronto Blue Jays was removed from the game against the Baltimore Orioles in the sixth inning in ridiculous fashion due to no fault of his own. The starter was removed after manager John Schneider made a blatant error that is not allowed under MLB rules.
Heading into the sixth inning Alek Manoah had recorded just two runs off five hits. After a one-out single by Anthony Santander, pitching coach Pete Walker visited the mound to talk to Manoah. After he got back to the mound, the 25-year-old hit Ryan Mountcastle to make it a two-out tied game.
John Schneider, forgetting that his colleague, Walker, had visited the mound just few moments back proceeded to do the same. This resulted in Alek Manoah requiring to be removed from the game. As per MLB rules, only one mound visit is allowed per team in an inning.
As his manager left the mound, home plate umpire and crew chief Dan Iassogna requested Manoah to be removed. Schneider realising his mistake had an embarassing situation as he called Tim Mazya to pitch in his place.
“I (messed) up,” Schneider said acknowleding his mistake after the game. “I forgot Pete went out there because we were talking about a lot of different stuff.”
Alek Manoah puts in good effort after mediocre performances so far this season
Manoah has come under fire this season for a few subpar performances. He gave a career-high five ER in his previous start against the New York Yankees. However, the 2022 MLB All-Star gave in a good shift against the Orioles, battling through 85 pitches to get five Ks and earning just two runs against his name. He would look to improve from hereon.
