During the sixth inning of Sunday's game between the Red Sox and Astros, Jarren Duran stepped up for his third at-bat of the game. After taking a ball and two strikes, anyone watching the television broadcast could see the Boston centerfielder's attention turn.

From behind the plate, a heckler began repeating "Tennis Racket!" in the direction of Duran. Evidently dejected by the fact that he had gone 0-for-2 and his team losing 10-0, Jarren Duran resorted to some rather colorful language, returning fire at the fan.

Only after his team's 10-2 loss to the Houston Astros did Duran realize that his remarks had been picked up by the microphone. Not only had the 27-year-old used expletives, but the term he used towards the fan is considered particularly hurtful to the LGBT community.

In the wake of the comments, the Boston Red Sox outfielder expressed remorse, saying that he "fell well short of that responsibility" to young fans before adding that he will use the opportunity to "grow as a person."

A former seventh round draft pick out of California, 2023 was Duran's first full MLB season. In 102 games for Boston, he hit .295/.346/.482 with 8 home runs and 40 RBIs. This season, Jarren Duran has brought his play to the next level. In 116 contests for the Sox, Duran is hitting .291/.350/.503 with 14 home runs, 58 RBIs, and is currently the MLB leader in plate appearances and triples.

Jarren Duran's comments not an indictment of LGBT community

In a joint statement, the Red Sox themselves backed up Duran's apology, saying:

"We echo Jarren's apology to our fans, especially to the LGBTQ community," the team said in a statement. "We strive to be an organization that welcomes all fans to Fenway Park, and we will continue to educate our employees, players, coaches and staff on the importance of inclusivity."

With that said, Duran has a history of reaching out to fans of all stripes, including those in the LGBT community. More likely than not, the star's poorly thought-out epithet was just that, rather than a snapshot into any sort of visceral hatred or prejudice.
