Freddie Freeman is no longer with Team Canada for the World Baseball Classic. After suffering a hamstring injury, he has returned to Los Angeles Dodgers camp and will rehab the injury there before the regular season.
Freeman was easily the star of the Canadian team, which is now eliminated from the tournament. With the United States and Mexico finishing 3-1, the Canadians have gone home.
The injury was a concern, though Freeman's presence on the team might not have changed the result of the tournament.
Freeman said the following via MLB.com:
“I thought it was a cramp, but it obviously didn’t go away. So I did the precautionary thing coming out of the game. You guys know it takes a lot for me to come out of a game, but that was the decision we had to make at that point in time.”
Precautions are good, especially when other MLB stars have suffered injuries in the World Baseball Classic.
Freddie Freeman injury: Is he available for Opening Day?
With a WBC injury, the natural worry is how it will affect the player for his MLB team. Is Opening Day in doubt for Freddie Freeman?
Freeman says that it's not:
“No, Opening Day is not in doubt. Took a complete day off, just finished three hours of treatment. If everything goes well, I am shooting for games this weekend at the Cactus League.”
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts added:
“He’s doing well, the strength is good. But it’s just mild and he just wanted to be careful. So getting treatment today, being off tomorrow, seeing where it takes him.”
It looks as if Freeman will return to action sooner rather than later and will not miss any time during the regular season.
