The New York Yankees acquired strikeout reliever Fernando Cruz and catcher Alex Jackson from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for their veteran catcher Jose Trevino. The fans didn't seem quite excited with this trade; however, Jose Trevino had already taken up the backup role in the team last season, as Austin Wells emerged and is to be the Yankees starting catcher in 2025.
The Reds sought a veteran catcher to mentor their young pitching staff alongside Tyler Stephenson, leading them to acquire Jose Trevino. In return, the Yankees gained backup catcher Alex Jackson and Fernando Cruz, a high-leverage reliever with an ERA more than his FIP.

Fans believed that the Yankees should have retained Jose Trevino, as he was considered a solid catch for the team.
"Wow Yankees fleeced," one fan said.
"Good deal for the Reds," another fan stated.
Other fans shared a similar sentiment about the Yankees trading the catcher Jose Trevino to the Cincinnati Reds.
"Great trade for the Reds, Trevino's a solid catch," one fan mentioned.
"Yankees giving up already? Smh," one fan remarked.
"Didn’t think Trevino would get dealt," one fan opined.
"Yankees lost the trade," one fan wrote.
The Reds are expecting to add more depth with Jose Trevino on the roster
Jose Trevino, who spent three seasons as the Yankees’ catcher after four years with the Rangers, was traded to the Reds on Friday. After serving as a backup catcher to the rookie Austin Wells, the Yankees exchanged him for Fernando Cruz and Alex Jackson.
The Cincinnati Reds aim to strengthen their catching depth by adding Jose Trevino, providing strong support behind their starting catcher Tyler Stephenson, who delivered an exceptional performance last season.
Trevino's career peaked in 2022, as he managed to appear in his career-high 115 games and hit 11 homers for the Bronx Bombers. As a result, he was also an All-Star in 2022 and won the Gold Glove Award behind the plate. His defensive prowess also excelled in the same year, which earned him the Platinum Glove award.
On the other hand, the Yankees signed Alex Jackson, who's been a part of 124 games in five seasons with the Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers, and Tampa Bay Rays. He was signed by the Reds for the minor league roster a couple of months ago. He's slashed .132/.224/.232 in 342 plate appearances.
The right-hander Fernando Cruz has spent his first three seasons with the Reds and has recorded a 4.32 ERA in 147 1/3 innings and will prove to be a great asset for New York.
