Detroit Tigers infielder Gleyber Torres opened up about the circumstances that led to his departure from the New York Yankees. In particular, Torres mentioned he never received an offer from the Bronx Bombers.
Yankees beat reporter Bryan Hoch quoted Torres saying:
"I think they have other priorities and I'm not on the list. I'm good.”
Torres’ comments unleashed a flurry of fan reactions. Here’s a look at what fans had to say about the situation.
“This is so f*cked. I hope Gley absolutely kills it with the Tigers and proves the Yankees org wrong,” a fan weighed in.
“There needs to be a deep dive someday as to why this organization hated him so much,” this fan remarked.
“If they didn’t like him, why keep him around for 7 years? I think a call would have been appropriate. The #yankees have lost its soul and purpose,” another fan chimed in.
While some fans were rightfully upset by the Yanks’ lack of interest in bringing back Torres, others justified the team’s decision.
Let’s look at what these fans had to say.
“Huge issues/low baseball IQ,” a fan wrote.
“Awful defensively and on the bases. His bat wasn’t good enough to make up for that,” this fan posted on social media.
“Couldn't field, bad baserunner. Had to get benched for lackadaisical play,” another fan opined.
Torres will look to prove his detractors wrong as he suits up for the Tigers this season. His one-year, $15 million deal will be an opportunity to prove he’s worth a multi-year, multi-million-dollar contract.
Yankees’ rival was reportedly interested in Gleyber Torres
A Sports Illustrated piece published on Sunday explored a report by Alex Speier of the Boston Globe in which Speier discussed the interest the Boston Red Sox had in Gleyber Torres.
According to the report, the Red Sox were looking at Torres to fill in the spot at second base. In particular, Torres, a right-handed hitter, fit the profile the Red Sox were looking for at second. However, it seems Boston never formally put an offer on the table, prompting the Torres camp to accept the Tigers’ one-year proposition.
Based on the Sports Illustrated piece, the Red Sox seemed to prioritize their starting rotation over the lineup. That prioritization led to the Garrett Crochet deal and the Walker Buehler signing.
It remains to be seen if the Red Sox had signed Torres anyway. Nevertheless, Torres was more inclined to guarantee an opportunity for next season rather than wait around any longer.
Torres will be playing for another contract in 2025. So, fans should expect the 28-year-old Venezuelan’s best effort in Motown.
