Given the reports that the New York Yankees want to put Cody Bellinger in center field, the team still needs a first baseman. Even after spending $218 million on one player and making two blockbuster trades, New York general manager Brian Cashman may not be done spending this year.

According to the New York Post, the Yankees are being particularly aggressive in the first base market. That remains one of the biggest holes on their roster, but not one Cashman seems intent on ignoring.

They are reportedly looking at Pete Alonso, Christian Walker, Carlos Santana and Paul Goldschmidt. They are engaged in talks with each of them, and any of the four would play first base and confirm Bellinger as the everyday center fielder.

That would allow Aaron Judge to shift back to right field and they have expressed a desire to get Jasson Dominguez more playing time. He would presumably be the starting left fielder.

How the Yankees can address remaining holes on roster

Even after signing Max Fried and trading for Devin Williams and Cody Bellinger, the Yankees have spots that need addressing. They still need either a second baseman or third baseman, a first baseman and possibly another outfielder.

They're reportedly looking at a free agent option at first base. They've also been eyeing Alex Bregman for third base, which would shift Jazz Chisholm Jr. over to second.

Here's how things could look next year on offense:

  • 1B: Christian Walker, Pete Alonso, Carlos Santana, Paul Goldschmidt, or Oswaldo Cabrera.
  • 2B: Jazz Chisholm Jr., Oswaldo Cabrera, or a free agent/trade.
  • 3B: Jazz Chisholm Jr., Alex Bregman, Oswaldo Cabrera, or another free agent.
  • SS: Anthony Volpe
  • RF: Aaron Judge
  • CF: Cody Bellinger
  • LF: Jasson Dominguez
  • DH: Giancarlo Stanton

It's clear that not a lot of positions are set. Oswaldo Cabrera can play almost any of the open spots but he can't play them all at the same time. The Yankees have to at least get another infielder, which would allow them to use Chisholm Jr. and Cabrera at the open spots after making that move.
