In his six years as Yankees manager, Aaron Boone has been a lightning rod for criticism, but also a hero for fans at many times. Now - for better or for worse - the skipper is coming back for at least one more year.
On Friday, it was announced that the Yankees would be exercizing Boone's club option, keeping him in uniform for next season. The team option entitles Boone to another $3.3 million to manage the team in 2025.
"Aaron Boone is officially back for 2025" - Talkin' Yanks
After the New York Yankees crashed out of the 2024 World Series, many fans put Aaron Boone in their crosshairs. Beneath the announcement that Boone would be back in the dugout, many fans took to X to offer their thoughts.
Following his club's World Series loss, Boone was roundly criticized. The criticism largely came from a released Los Angeles Dodgers scouting report that emphasized the Yankees to be "talent over fundamentals". Some high-profile mishaps during the Fall Classic cemented perceptions among some fans that the 50 year-old is not the man for the job.
"Rewarding failure ensures more failure" - claimed a fan
"A nightmare in the Bronx" - said another
"Another season of failure....!!!!" - projected a passionate voice
After the 2023 season, calls for Boone's tenure as manager to end were even louder. After narrowly edging out the Boston Red Sox to avoid their first last-place divisional finish since 1990, Boone was seen as a culprit. Now, even after taking the Yankees to within three wins of the World Series, a significant portion of fans in New York want the former MLB infielder gone.
"Life long yankee fan and i won’t watch another game with him at the helm" - wrote a detractor
"Disappointed" - said another
"Why do the Yankees continue to shoot themselves in the foot? This is frustrating" - lamented a final voice
Aaron Boone proceeds with full support of Yankees' front office
Although there is evidently a cohort of Yankees fans who are deeply dissatisfied with Boone's performance, the Yankees' head office is unphased. As longtime GM Brian Cashman said of the decision to keep Boone onboard:
"I'm a big Aaron Boone fan. I think he's a great manager and I think we're lucky to have him"
Whatever the truth is about Boone's contributions as manager, a significant minority of Yankees fans are not fans. This will undoubtedly weigh heavily on both Boone and Brian Cashman as the 2025 season gets underway.
