YES Network analyst Russ Salzberg expects long-time Yankees pitcher to step up this season

As an exciting 2023 season dawns on the MLB fraternity, New York Yankees fans continue to cling to the hope of finding the success of the good old days.

While the re-signing of Aaron Judge this offseason comes across as the biggest coup, the team's all-round build cannot be questioned. Brian Cashman and his team have done a splendid job the past couple of years, mixing youth and experience to concoct a championship-pedigree team.

YES Network analyst Russ Salzberg made his thoughts about the Yankees very clear in his Get a Load of This podcast.

"If the @Yankees are going have the success they’re hoping for, Luis Severino needs to come up big and take the ball every start ! @YESNetwork" - Russ Salzberg, Twitter

According to him, the New York Yankees are to see success only if they show faith in players like Luis Severino. Gerrit Cole might be their ace, but if the Yankees can give Severino at least 30 starts, Salzberg's confident the teamm can be at its best.

"Give me 30 starts from Luis Severino, and then Yankees will be cooking. I genuinely really believe that. We know about Cole, he's your ace. We know about Rodon, but history tells me that if Severino can give the Yankees and you, the fans, 30 starts, then you're going to be very happy."

Severino went 7-3 with a 3.18 ERA in 19 starts in the 2022 season. With Brett Gardner not re-signing for the 2022 season, Severino also became the longest-tenured Yankee (his seventh with them).

The Yankees man missed most of the previous three seasons due to shoulder and elbow injuries.

Luis Severino is a 2-time All-Star

The Dominican pitcher signed with the Yankees as an international free agent in 2011 and made his MLB debut four years later.

His breakthrough season came in 2017 when he stamped his authority on the league, becoming one of the most feared pitchers that year. He was awarded his maiden All-Star call-up for his terrific performances during the season and even finished third in the Cy Young Award vote. Severino was voted an All-Star again in 2018.

Severino will be hoping to return to his best form this coming season after rehabilitating injuries the past few years.
