Three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer is not willing to call time on his Hall of Fame-worthy career as yet, but he remains an unattached free agent at this point of the offseason. Scherzer is reportedly doing some workouts with scouts from various teams taking a look at him before considering a deal for the two-time World Series champion.

New York Mets sportscaster Evan Roberts stated that the team must not consider bringing Max Scherzer back for a second stint, as he seriously doubts that the veteran pitcher will be able to stay healthy for an entire season. Roberts believes the Mets will not be able to place any faith in Scherzer in the playoffs even if he goes on to have an excellent campaign in the regular season.

Evan Roberts is the co-host of the Evan and Tiki sports radio talk show on WFAN. He gave his thoughts on the prospect of the Mets adding Max Scherzer to their starting rotation during the show this weekend. [49:30 - 53:46]

"I just can't see him getting through a full season," Roberts said. "He hasn't been able to do it the last couple of years. Even in the year of 2022, when he had such a good regular season for us, he made 23 starts; he missed a lot of time. And then ultimately, he got his a** kicked in the postseason. The excuse we heard was he's not healthy.

"Even if he pitches well for the Mets and somehow, by accident, makes 20 starts, you could never trust him in a big spot. Can never do it," he added. "So, I hear this, and I say I'm good. I'll pass."

Max Scherzer joined the Mets on a three-year, $130 million deal in 2022 with an average annual value of $43.3 million, the largest AAV in the history of the MLB.

Despite criticizing Max Scherzer on his show, Evan Roberts feels that the 40-year-old right-hander can still perform at the major league level, although he can no longer be considered as a frontline starting pitcher. Roberts feels Scherzer still has the stuff in his locker, but he is unlikely to stay healthy for long.

"Scherzer isn't pitching like a guy who's done. He just can't stay healthy, and I think there's a big difference," Roberts said. "Last year he made nine starts, and he wasn't bad in those nine starts.
"He wasn't pitching anything like he used to be, but he was certainly serviceable," Roberts added. "The problem was he made nine starts."

Scherzer was traded to the Texas Rangers in the middle of the 2023 campaign. He made just 17 starts in one and a half seasons for the Tangers and had a 6-6 record with a 3.57 ERA.
