He was a four-year letterman for the Home School Texas Alliance for Christian Athletes Storm under head coach Daniel Sweet and was a three-time All-American in the Homeschool World Series Association. For this remarkable performance Perfect Game rated him as the No. 4 right-handed pitcher and the 10th-best player from Texas. In 2020, he played for the Rangers Area Code Team.

In 2022, Johnson joined Dallas Baptist University, where he made 18 appearances, including nine starts, in his freshman year. He recorded a 3-2 record with a 4.30 ERA, striking out 47 batters and walking 22 over 58.2 innings. In his sophomore year in 2023, he was named a Third Team All-American by the NCBWA, finishing the season with 116 strikeouts, the 16th-highest total in the nation, and the second-most in DBU Baseball's Division I era since 2004.
