Where will Mookie Betts fit into Team USA's plans in the upcoming World Baseball Classic? If there is any doubt that Team USA has a stacked team for this March's tournament, that very question should lay it to rest.
Betts is one of the best players in the world. The Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder registered 117 hits last season, more than any other player in the entire MLB.
Last summer, Betts committed to representing his country at the 2023 World Baseball Classic. The tournament is set to be held between March 8th and 21st at a variety of venues across the USA, Taiwan and Japan. It is the first WBC to be held since 2017.

Also making his debut for his country in the tournament will be Los Angeles Angels star Mike Trout, who has also been designated as the team's captain. Trout will likely play center field in the tournament.
It was originally thought that Bryce Harper of the Philadelphia Phillies would flank Trout in rightfield, the position currently occupied by Betts. However, Harper is set to miss the tournament - and a significant portion of the season - recovering from Tommy John surgery.
However, according to some MLB insiders, it is looking increasingly likely that Betts will take on a new position altogether. Team USA is set to kick off its tournament in Phoenix against Great Britain on March 11th.

Although Betts is one of the top outfielders, MLB.com's Jon Morosi is reporting that he will be playing at second base. This means that second baseman and NL batting leader Jeff McNeil of the New York Mets will likely occupy one of the other roles, or serve as a pinch hitter for Team USA.
With or without Mookie Betts, the 2023 WBC is Team USA's to lose
Pundits are calling this one of the best teams ever to take to a baseball field. The reality remains that the team is so replete with depth and talent that the absence of one player may not make a noticeable difference. With that in mind, Mookie Betts is Mookie Betts and will likely see his fair share of playing time this March.
