Although no home runs or strikeouts were logged by Dave Roberts during the Dodgers' recent World Series run, the skipper was no less instrumental. Recently, Roberts offered some insight on his personal philosophy regarding his team's recent victory.
In a recent interview with Mookie Betts' podcast, On Base, the pair discussed the NLDS against the Padres. Although it was merely the first of three postseason rounds, the intensity — along with the tense history between the two teams — made for a scintillating five games. According to Dave Roberts, that series felt more like the World Series than the Fall Classic itself.
"I felt, from my perspective, that was the World Series," Dave Roberts said on the NLDS vs. the Padres" - B/R Walkoff
Roberts claimed that the NLDS against the San Diego Padres "from my perspective, was the World Series." The 52 year-old cited the fact that San Diego won the season series and were one of MLB's hottest teams coming into the postseason.
Fans on Reddit had a field day with Roberts' comments.
Many fans took Roberts' comments as a slight against the New York Yankees, the Dodgers' eventual World Series opponents. However, the World Series was not actually that close. Despite scoring about the same number of runs, LA went up 3-0 early, and were able to close out the deal in Game 5.
"In terms of excitement, storylines, and overall competition it sure felt that way," a fan claimed.
"I am so here for all the disrespect to the Yankees," another wrote.
The Padres were the only team that put the Los Angeles Dodgers in an elimination situation in the 2024 postseason, doing so twice. Even in the NLCS against the Mets, it was never notably close, and the Dodgers outscored Francisco Lindor's club 46-25 over five games, shutting them out twice.
"He's not wrong," a fan said.
"Unfathomable shade from America's uncle right here," another wrote.
"Yooo that's what I've been saying," a final voice claimed.
Dave Roberts shows respect to Yankees' skill in wake of victory
Although many fans took Dave Roberts' claims to be a great affront against the Yankees, the veteran manager understands that they were a highly potent offense. As Roberts also divulged to Betts in their interview:
"I will tell you this now publicly, I was so afraid to come back to Los Angeles for Game 6"
A healthy respect of one's opponents is a hallmark of a steady manager, and Roberts certainly fits the bill.
