The MLB postseason is well underway and has more than lived up to the hype. From the Detroit Tigers' Cinderella story to Shohei Ohtani hitting a home run in his first playoff game, it's safe to say that October baseball is back!
While a number of clubs are pushing to be crowned the 2024 World Series champions, it has also given fans and experts an opportunity to look back on the history of the postseason. The hit baseball channel Talkin' Baseball briefly looked into the teams with the best winning percentages in the playoffs.
It's clear that some teams have seemingly always been in the playoffs, but that does not mean that they have been successful. Some teams are simply better in October than other clubs. This subject is worthy of a deeper dive into these clubs as reaching the postseason on its own might not equate to success.
Here's a look at the top 5 teams in terms of postseason win percentage since 2000
#5 - Houston Astros
Although there will always be an asterisk next to the Houston Astros 2017 World Series, there is no denying that the franchise has been a consistent title threat over the past decade. Thanks to their run of success, as well as missing the postseason altogether from 2006-2014, the Astros rank fifth on this list with a .568 win percentage in the playoffs (75 wins and 57 losses).
Houston also won the 2022 World Series.
#4 - Boston Red Sox
Another club that has been a force since 2000 is the Boston Red Sox. Although the club had a legendary World Series drought, the Red Sox won four titles after snapping the "Curse of the Bambino". These four championship runs (2004, 2007, 2013 and 2018) helped the Red Sox put together a .600 playoff winning percentage (63-42) since 2000.
#3 - San Francisco Giants
Unsurprisingly, the San Francisco Giants sit third on this list. When it comes to the Giants, it seems that they either win the World Series or miss the playoffs altogether. During their near-dynastic run from 2010-2014, the team won three World Series titles, while missing the postseason twice. This split helps their playoff winning percentage of .602 (50-33) since 2000.
#2 - Philadelphia Phillies
Second on the list are the Philadelphia Phillies. Over the last 24 seasons, the Phillies' success has come in two different waves. Thanks to short, hot stretches, the Phillies have been able to keep their postseason winning percentage high. Their .605 percentage (46-30) has them as the runners-up since 2000.
The Phillies won the 2008 World Series and had further appearances in 2009 and 2022.
#1 - Kansas City Royals
It may come as a bit of a surprise but the Kansas City Royals have the highest winning percentage in the MLB postseason since 2000. The reason behind their whopping .710 percentage (22-9) is the fact that they either miss the playoffs or reach the World Series.
Since 2000, the Royals have made the playoffs three times: 2014, 2015, and 2024. The Royals lost a seven-game 2014 World Series, only to win the title in 2015. Aside from those two, this season is the only other time they have reached the playoffs. Can Bobby Witt Jr. and company keep this streak alive?
