In 2017, the United States National Baseball team won the World Baseball Classic tournament. But what catapulted them into winning could be Adam Jones’ remarkable catch that led them to the semi-finals.
The match was between the United States and the Dominican Republic. It was the seventh innings and Manny Machado of the Dominican Republic hit a home run. Jones immediately ran to catch the ball, and leaped to successfully catch it.
When asked by the Guardian about his thoughts on his game-winning catch. Jones said the following:
“I’m still in kind of shock that I even got to that ball,”

“I mean, off the bat I’m just like, ‘This ball’s hit really far, so just keep going, keep going.’ You know this California air’s going to slow it down and just never quit."

That’s just the style I play with. I don’t mind running into a wall or two. I just kept going after the ball. I saw the replay after the game. It was a hell of catch"
Adam Jones' catch and Giancarlo Stanton's home run are what many consider to have led to the team winning the match. Team United States won the match 6-3 and went on to play against team Japan in the 2017 World Baseball Classic.
When Team USA had difficulty finding players to play in the 2017 World Baseball Classic
According to Team United States' manager Jim Leyland in 2017, many big players declined to join the World Baseball Classic tournament. However, Leyland praised those who did sign up for the tournament.
He said the following to the Guardian when asked about the situation:
“There were a lot of people that respectfully declined, and we’re not going to throw anybody under the bus. We’re going to honor the people that accepted and are here. So we’re moving forward, and that’s all we’re talking about. ... And right now that’s the only team I care about."
He continued with:
"And these players that are here are the only players I care about right now.”
Team United States won the 2017 World Baseball Classic, the second time that they have won this title.
