Top 10 Shot Blocking Guards in the NBA right now

2014 NBA Finals - Game Four
Is Dwyane Wade still the no.1 shot blocking guard in the league?

Whenever we use the word "Block", we think of a big man instantly. Guards are often correlated with steals, which makes sense but sometimes they tend to give us supreme blocks! To compensate with their general (rarely do we have 6'9" point guards) lack of height, the guards must have an extremely good technique and timing to block shots.

This list includes only players whose primary position is in one of the guard spots, hence players like LeBron James (SG), Giannis Antetokounmpo (SG), Kevin Durant (SG), Brandon Ingram (SG) etc. are not included in the list.

Without further ado let's jump into the list of top 10 shot-blocking guards in the league right now.

"Half man half amazing" is still at it even when he is 40 years old. Obviously not as athletic as before, but still averaging 0.6 blocks per game and is on pace for 35-40 blocks in the season. Extraordinary for anyone at the age 40 let alone a guard! His career best is 92 blocks in the 1999-00 season. Apart from it, he also has 5 more 50+ blocks seasons.

#10 Eric Bledsoe

Eric Bledsoe
Eric Bledsoe

An explosive point guard of a height just above 6 feet uses his athleticism to block shots. He has been averaging 0.7 bpg this season. If he keeps this pace up, he will end up near to 50 blocks this season, which will be the only 2nd time in the NBA history for a guy less than 6'2" to get more than 50 blocks in a season. Who got it the first time? Eric Bledsoe in 2013.

#9 Kent Bazemore

The Atlanta Hawks player is one of the most hyperactive players on the court, always trying his best for the team. He will attempt many blocks in a game, and often succeed. He has been averaging 0.6bpg and is on pace for 50 blocks in the season.

#8 Tyler Johnson

#8 for Miami Heat - Tyler Johnson

The Miami Heat 6'4" guard has a vertical leap of 40+ inches and uses his insane athleticism to block shots. The guard is now on pace for 60-65 blocks this season, which will be a serious achievement for a guard. His career best is 44 blocks in a season, which he achieved last year in only 73 games played.

#7 Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson
Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson is one of the better perimeter defenders in the league right now and picks up Stephen Curry's slack on the defensive end. Although Curry has improved significantly on the defense, still Klay defends the best perimeter player on the team.

Since Kevin Durant has joined the Golden State Warriors, his blocks numbers have dropped. In 2016-17 he only had 40 blocks, which still is decent for a guard but less for a player of Thompson's caliber. His career best is 60 blocks in a season, which he got in the 2014-15 season. He is currently averaging 0.6 blocks per game and is on pace for 50 blocks this season.

#6 Lonzo Ball

This guy is so bad a shooter, that we can't determine whether he is shooting or passing under the rim. But he is a very able player on the defensive end. He is averaging 1 block per game and is on pace for 80 blocks this season. Because of his father's random blabbering, we can't seem to see the good side of the kid.

#5 Victor Oladipo

Just recently, Oladipo claimed jokingly that he is a better shot blocker than Myles Turner on The Starters show. Well, for a guard to be a better shot blocker than the league leader in blocks per game is a little too far-fetched, but we can safely say that Oladipo is amongst the bests shot blocking guards in the league right now.

It hasn't been long since the fat Oladipo blocked Lillard's dunk attempt a few years ago. Since then, he switched his teams twice, got fitter in the offseason and became one of the leaders in the most improved player race this season. He has also gotten better as a shot blocker, averaging 1 block per game and on pace for 80 blocks this season! His best career blocking season was in 2015-16 for Orlando, when he had 54 blocks.

#4 Danny Green

If you are playing for the San Antonio Spurs, you are bound to go under the radar more often than not. Danny Green, apart from this three points shooting has been a defensive pest for 7 years for the Spurs. He has 5 consecutive seasons with more than 50 blocks, 3 seasons more than 60 blocks and a career-high of 87 blocks in the 2014-15 season when he played 81 games. His 87 blocks in a season are third best for any active guard for most blocks in a season.

This season, he has been averaging a tied league-high 1.2 blocks per game and is on pace to 85-90 blocks.

#3 Dwyane Wade

Cleveland Cavaliers v Milwaukee Bucks
Dwyane Wade

Arguably, the second-best guard shot blocker of all time (after Michael Jordan) is third on our list. Wade has 8 seasons of 50+ blocks, 6 seasons of 60+ blocks, 4 seasons of 80+ blocks and a career-high 106! blocks in the 2008-09 season. Imagine, a guard having more than 100 blocks in a season. Only the active guard to have achieved that feat, and only Michael Jordan (twice, 131 and 125), Reggie Lewis (105) and George Gervin(twice, 110 and 104) were the other guards to have achieved that.

Despite being 35, he is still among one of the best shot-blocking guards in the league. Although he has been averaging 0.8 blocks per game and is on pace for 55-60 block only, he is still blocking 7-footers! Safe to say, the flash has left has imprints deep in the NBA.

#2 Andre Roberson

New York Knicks v Oklahoma City Thunder
#21 Andre Roberson

One of the best perimeter defenders currently in the NBA. He is averaging 1.0 block per game and is on pace to 75 blocks in this season. Although, with his height and defensive prowess, he has the potential to get more than 100 blocks in a season. His career best is 79 blocks which he attained in the 2016-17 season.

In the 2015-16 season, he had only 42 blocks and improved a lot on it the next season having 79 blocks. Maybe he will improve even more in the next few years and reach the landmark of 100.

#1 John Wall

New Orleans Pelicans v Washington Wizards
John Wall

He claimed to be the best shot blocking guard ever a few days ago. To be fair, to reach that level, he has to climb a mountain as his career-best blocks in a season is only 59 which is lower than many players on this list. But he has the potential to cross that mark, and will most probably do it this season as he is averaging 1.2 blocks per game, which is tied league best for the guards this season. Because of his injury early in the season, he is on pace to 80-85 blocks only despite averaging 1.2 blocks per game.
