Chennedy Carter will join the ranks of unrestricted free agents as the signing period draws closer. Carter didn't receive a qualifying offer from the Chicago Sky, and her pending free agency has fans speculating on where she might end up, with Indiana Fever fans musing about her joining their team, for better or worse.
Chennedy Carter was one of the leaders for the Chicago Sky last season alongside Angel Reese. She nearly guided the Sky into the postseason while pacing them in scoring at 17.5 points per game. She brings in a scoring prowess that would complement reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year Caitlin Clark well, but her attitude and negative impact in the locker room has fans concerned.
Carter's disagreements with Sky head coach Tyler Marsh resulted in tension that followed the team as they navigated through the season. It is likely one of the chief factors behind the team's decision not to offer her to stay as they look towards a future featuring Angel Reese as the centerpiece of the team.
Fans have been on the fence on whether or not they want the team to sign Carter in free agency, saying:

"My honest take on the Chennedy Carter stuff as I root for the Fever is that I think she’s too much of a risk to bring to IND considering her marred track record whether it’s all fully her fault or not (depends on who tells the story) proceeds her.." one fan said.
"Chennedy Carter needs to go to the @IndianaFeveror @LVAces… scary hours if she goes to the fever," another fan commented.
" Fever should sign Chennedy Carter. I actually think they would get along. They both hoopers and put the work in. There is a level of respect between people who really doing it. Could work out really well for everyone involved," a fan speculated.
While Carter brings in a fiery attitude, she could be a good fit on the Indiana Fever for multiple reasons.
Chennedy Carter brings an offensive presence taking pressure off of Caitlin Clark
Carter has averaged more than 14 points per game in three of her four professional seasons and is coming off a career-scoring year. She would be a welcome perimeter threat for a Fever team that struggled to maintain an offensive rhythm outside of Clark's talent. Carter's ability to work off the dribble brings some much-needed verticality to the Fever's offense, making things easier for everyone.
Carter could be the leading voice in the locker room
Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston are the leaders on the court for the Fever, but both are quiet players who prefer to lead by example. Carter brings in a more expressive personality that, if handled and implemented correctly, could galvanize the team and bring them together. During her time with the Sky, Carter's teammates looked to her as a leader, a role she could continue to fill on the Fever.
Carter could compliment Kelsey Mitchell and lead the team's defense
The Indiana Fever have cored Kelsey Mitchell this offseason and will prioritize re-signing her to a long-term deal this offseason. She has been the team's defensive leader but at times was overmatched in the playoff series against the Connecticut Sun. Bringing in Carter allows the Fever to present teams with different looks defensively instead of solely depending on Mitchell as an individual.
Chennedy Carter's reputation might paint her as a risk for the team that signs her, but if the Fever brings her in on a one-year deal, she might unlock the team's next level.
