3 reasons why D'Angelo Russell deserves to be praised for his second stint with the LA Lakers
#1 He acted professionally
D'Angelo Russell could have expressed his dissatisfaction, caused disruptions, and made it challenging to work with him. However, despite locker room turmoil, coaching issues, and occasionally being used as a scapegoat, he maintained his professionalism.
Russell consistently focused on his game. Night after night, whether he was struggling or excelling, he never became a distraction. He played to the best of his abilities, even when circumstances were not in his favor.
#2 Acceptance and accountability
D'Angelo Russell possesses the talent to be a starter on most teams in the league. However, he was occasionally asked to come off the bench, both under Darvin Ham and JJ Redick. Throughout these changes, he maintained a positive attitude and played whatever role was required of him.
To further demonstrate his team-first mentality, Russell has taken accountability in front of the media. He has even apologized when he felt he did not put the team first. Russell has emphasized the importance of holding himself accountable, particularly on defense. Instead of complaining about the coaches' lack of trust in his defensive abilities, he acknowledged that he needed to earn that trust.
#3 He remained with the LA Lakers when he could have left
D'Angelo Russell held all the cards coming into the 2024-25 season. With a player option on his contract, he could have opted out to seek opportunities elsewhere, especially given the mixed views from part of the fanbase and the team's ex-coach.
However, instead of leaving when he had the chance, Russell opted into the final year of his deal, remaining with the LA Lakers. His decision ensured that the Lakers could retain a key member of their roster and maintain flexibility in the trade market. Had he left, Rob Pelinka might not have had the right assets to secure the defensive wing that LA coveted in Dorian Finney-Smith.
