One of the most basic requirements for NBA players is knocking down free throws. Teams practice them regularly, but some players remain inconsistent, as different factors affect the shot. While there are common mechanics used in shooting the ball, others develop unusual forms.

Rick Barry used the underhand shot but was one of the greatest free throw shooters in NBA history. Shawn Marion flicked his shot but still made 81.0% of his free throw attempts in his 16-year career.

Let's look at some current NBA players with unusual free throw forms.

Five current NBA players with unusual free throws

#1 Jeremy Sochan | Forward | San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are known for making things simple for their players and relying on the basics of basketball. Jeremy Sochan shot below 70.0% from free throws as a rookie, so the Spurs coaching staff helped him change his shot.

Sochan was most comfortable with using one hand in shooting his free throws. It's unusual because he doesn't rely on his left hand for support. He solely uses his right hand to shoot, and it's effective in a way. He improved to 77.1% last season but is at 70.0% this season.

It's no secret that Cameron Payne has one of the most unusual shots in the NBA today. When Payne signed with the New York Knicks this offseason, the fanbase began poking fun at his shooting form.

Payne is left-handed but brings his shot from the right side before shooting it. It's kind of like Lonzo Ball's initial form but on the other side. Despite constant jokes about it, Payne is a career 82.5% shooter from free throws and 37.2% from beyond the arc.

#3 Clint Capela | Center | Atlanta Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks don't require Clint Capela to knock down 3s, as his main job is to catch lobs, grab rebounds and defend the paint. Since he plays down low, Capela gets fouled due to his poor free throw shooting. He's a career 54.5% free throw shooter.

Capela has good mechanics in his free throw routine, starting with a few dribbles and bringing it near his head. It appears to be a decent form before his release shifts from right to left, seemingly affecting the ball's spin and trajectory.

#4 Oso Ighodaro | Center | Phoenix Suns

Phoenix Suns rookie Oso Ighodaro went viral earlier this season after fans saw him practicing his 3-point shots. Ighodaro isn't required to knock down 3s, but it's great to see a young player working to improve.

However, Ighodaro's shot needs work, as it has some broken mechanics. It starts well with the way he handles the ball before readying his shot. He pushes off the ball, flicking his wrist in the process. But what makes his shot awkward is the off-hand being high straight in the air and his fingers spread.

#5 Moses Brown | Center | Westchester Knicks

Technically not in the NBA at the moment, Moses Brown played nine games for the Indiana Pacers from Nov. 20 to Dec. 9. Brown is with the New York Knicks' G League affiliate and has a chance of getting another stint in the NBA this season.

Brown's free throw is a combination of Jeremy Sochan and Oso Ighodaro's shots. He brings the ball up after a few dribbles and removes his left hand from it before flinging it with his right hand. That might be the best way to describe it, but here's a video of it.

Brown has only played in 159 games in six seasons, shooting 53.8% from the free throw line.
