LeBron James will turn 40 in two weeks but he remains one of the best players in the NBA. James has finally started to show signs of slowing down, which is not surprising since Father Time eventually catches up with everyone. One of his stats this season that got a lot of people talking is his plus/minus.

Ad

It's a stat that measures players' impact on the game based on score changes when they're on the court. Most coaches use it to assess a certain player's performance, whether he's a star or a role player. It's all about looking for the right lineups to use and net the best result.

Plus/minus can be misleading for some people who just look at the stats. A player might produce efficiently but still have a negative plus-minus. In turn, a player who barely did anything has a positive plus-minus. The stat is affected by many different factors, which should also be considered.

Nevertheless, here's a closer look at some players with a negative plus/minus this season.

5 surprising NBA stars who have a negative plus/minus this season

#1. LeBron James (-5.4)

LeBron James is having his worst season in terms of plus/minus at -5.4. It is significantly bad compared to his second-worst at -2.1 during the 2021-21 NBA season.

However, James is still averaging a near triple-double of 22.8 points, 8.0 rebounds and 9.1 assists. Coach JJ Redick is analytics-driven, so he knows it's not a good look for "The King." Redick also probably knows it's got to do with the lineups he's putting in with him.

#2. Bradley Beal (-3.0)

Bradley Beal has been limited to just 15 games this season for the Phoenix Suns due to injuries. He's also not playing with a bunch of bad players since he's alongside fellow NBA stars Devin Booker and Kevin Durant among others.

But still, Beal has a plus/minus of -3.0 for the season. It's the second-worst of his career, with -3.5 during the 2019-20 season for the Washington Wizards as the worst. It's all about personnel and lineups for Beal, who plays the same position as Booker.

#3. Anthony Davis (-2.2)

Anthony Davis is probably having one of the best seasons of his NBA career, averaging 27.8 ppg, 11.4 rpg, 3.3 apg, 1,2 spg and 2.0 bpg. He's also stayed relatively healthy for the second straight season.

However, AD's current plus/minus is -2.2, which might be surprising for some due to how good he has been this season. Again, it could be a misleading stat for others, but the LA Lakers coaching staff knows some roster upgrade is needed.

#4. Devin Booker (-1.4)

Just like Bradley Beal, Devin Booker has a negative plus/minus this season. It's surprising since Booker is averaging 25.4 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 6.4 apg and 1.1 spg.

Nevertheless, this also shows that the Suns roster is flawed despite having a trio of NBA stars. Kevin Durant being out for several games contributed to Booker's plus/minus being at -1.4.

#5. Damian Lillard (-0.8)

Damian Lillard is only having his third season with a negative plus/minus, which shows how good he has been in his career. It's still early in the campaign, so Lillard's -0.8 plus/minus is expected to improve later.

The Milwaukee Bucks were off to an awful start, so it's understandable how bad they were despite having "Dame" and Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Bucks are playing much better now, so expect that plus/minus to change.
