His versatility allows him to operate both as a small forward and shooting guard. He comes from a basketball family, with his father Adrian Griffin being a former NBA player and recently head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks.
Griffin played high-school basketball at Archbishop Stepinac High School, where he played with his older brother as a freshman. As a sophomore, he formed a dynamic backcourt duo with R.J. Davis, averaging 20.9 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 3.5 blocks per game. As a junior, he averaged 17.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game, leading Stepinac to the CHSAA Archdiocesan title. His outstanding performances in high school led to his selection for the 2019 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship. Griffin scored 18 points vs Canada in the final, winning the gold medal for team USA.
As a five-star recruit coming out of high school, Griffin committed to Duke for college. He played 39 games in his freshman season, the most in his conference that season. After averaging 10.4 points and 3.9 rebounds in 24.0 minutes per game, Griffin was named on the ACC All-Freshman team and played with NBA star Paolo Banchero on a stacked Duke roster.
