Alejandro Abrines Redondo, more commonly known as Alex Abrines is a Spanish professional basketball player. He currently plays for FC Barcelona of the Spanish Liga ACB and the EuroLeague. Abrines has played for both Spanish leagues and the NBA. Between 2010 and 2012, Abrines played for Clinicas Rincon and Unicaja. In September 2012, he was traded to FC Barcelona where he played for one season. In April 2013, Abrines declared for the NBA draft. In the 2013 NBA draft, he was picked by the Oklahoma City Thunder as the 32nd overall pick.
However, Abrines’s contract had not yet been completed in the Spanish Liga ACB. So he returned to Spain where he played for 3 years with FC Barcelona. On July 19, 2016, Abrines parted ways with FC Barcelona and came to the United States to continue his career with the Oklahoma City Thunder. He made his debut for the Thunder in the 2016 pre-season. Abrines usually came off the bench and was the stretch 4 whenever he played. He was one of the favorite assist partners for his teammates Russell Westbrook. He also filled in the starting spot whenever star player Paul George would get injured. In the 2019 season, Abrines was waived by the Thunder at the trade deadline.
After this, Abrines returned to Spain where he resigned with FC Barcelona. He signed a two-year deal with the option of a third year. In 2021, he extended his contract to extend till 2026. Abrines also has a rich national career in Spain. He played for the junior men’s national teams. He won the gold medal representing Spain in the 2011 FIBA Under-18 Europe Championship. He was also named to the All-Tournament team and the tournament’s MVP. He also played in the 2012 FIBA Under-20 Europe Championship, representing Spain, where he won the bronze medal. He then transferred to the men’s senior national team where he played for Spain in the 2016 Olympics. Spain won the bronze medal. He also represented Spain in EuroBasket 2017. Currently, he is expected to be on the roster for the FIBA World Cup 2023, his first FIBA World Cup.
