Injuries can play a big part in how an individual's career develops. As for Austin, he has faced issues with his shoulders ever since high school. In his freshman year, he averaged 4.1 points as he was in the reserves. He had to go through surgery for his shoulder due to injuries throughout the season. Reaves had to sit out the next season due to the NCAA transfer rules as he transferred to Oklahoma after his sophomore year. During this time he worked out and built his physic. In his senior year, Reaves averaged 18 points, 4.6 assists and 5 rebounds.

In the 2021 NBA draft, Reaves got an offer from the Detroit Pistons who planned on signing him to a two-way contract. He declined the offer as he wasn’t getting a guaranteed roster spot. The next month after the draft selections, Reaves signed a two-way contract with the Lakers on 3 August 2021. He made most of his time during the summer league averaging 7.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Reaves strong summer league was rewarded less than two months later when his two-way contract was turned into an official NBA contract.
