In high school, Reaves won class 2A state titles consecutively for 2 years. In a game against Forest City High School, he scored 73 points. He was a three-star prospect and for his college performance, Reaves got offers from South Dakota, Arkansas and Wichita State. He joined Wichita State on 20 January 2016.

He made most of his time during the summer league averaging 7.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. Reaves strong summer league was rewarded less than two months later when his two-way contract was turned into an official NBA contract.
