The Boston Celtics will be hoping to put their disappointing defeat to the LA Lakers behind them as they travel to face the shorthanded Dallas Mavericks at the American Airlines Center on Saturday evening.
This will be the first matchup between the two sides in the regular season this season. The last time these two met was in the 2024 NBA Finals, when the Celtics won their 18th championship. However, both teams have been shaky and inconsistent lately, making this game rather unpredictable.

Joe Mazzulla nearly has a full squad to choose from. Derrick White is the only one listed as questionable due to knee soreness. His status will be determined closer to tip-off.
Mazzulla will be cautious of the intensity his team displayed this week, as they fatigued badly against the Clippers and the Lakers. This is likely to influence his thoughts on the lineup for the upcoming game.
Barring any last-minute changes, the Celtics' starting unit will likely include Jayson Tatum, Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday, Derrick White and Jaylen Brown.
Dallas Mavericks Predicted Starting Lineups and Depth Chart
Jason Kidd has limited options for this matchup, with six players ruled out for the game.
Dereck Lively II recently suffered an ankle fracture and will miss three months of action. Luka Doncic and Dante Exum are the other two long-term absentees.
Dwight Powell (hip), Jaden Hardy (ankle) and Naji Marshall (illness) are also ruled out for the clash. Meanwhile, Klay Thompson is listed as questionable with an ankle injury.
Kidd is most likely to use the same lineup he went with against the OKC Thunder: P.J. Washington, Kessler Edwards, Daniel Gafford, Kyrie Irving and Spencer Dinwiddie.
Boston Celtics vs Dallas Mavericks preview
Despite being the only team to defeat the OKC Thunder more than once this season, the Mavericks are still under pressure to regain last season’s form. They have picked up only 4 wins in their last 15 games. Given the lengthy absence of their superstar Luka Doncic this season, this comes as no surprise. This stretch of poor performances dates back to Doncic's injury on Christmas Day.
However, the two wins against the Western Conference top seed demonstrate their ability to secure results that will help them avoid dropping further. They will be underdogs on Saturday, but the visitor's recent poor form may boost their confidence.
Paired with victories against the Golden State Warriors and the LA Clippers, recent weeks have been a rollercoaster for the Celtics. They went off script at the Crypto Arena on Thursday, suffering a 21-point loss against the Lakers.
The reigning champs haven't experienced back-to-back defeats recently. The only time this season they faced such setbacks was during Christmas, with losses to the Orlando Magic and Philadelphia 76ers.
They have plenty to prove, as they haven't achieved three consecutive wins in about two months. With the next few games at home, they will be hoping for consistent performances.
