France will open its 2024 Paris Olympics basketball gold medal bid with a game against Brazil on Saturday. The highly-touted Victor Wembanyama will be making his debut in the quadrennial games. He will team up with Rudy Gobert, Nic Batum and a handful of other NBA talents to give the hosts a rousing start.

Meanwhile, the Selecao had to go through the qualifying tournament in Latvia to punch a ticket to Paris. They were the only non-host team in qualifying that managed to earn a spot in the Olympics. Bruno Caboclo and Co. held off the Latvians to join the French, Germany and Japan in Group B.

Brazil vs. France: Game preview

The South Americans booked a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics behind a rugged, physical style and 3-point shooting that overwhelmed their opponents in Latvia. In the final game against the host Latvians, they led almost the entire game before eventually winning 94-69.

The Selecao shot 46.4%, including a dazzling 54.2% from long range. Bruno Caboclo dominated the interior and pushed his team to relentlessly attack in transition. Caboclo will be invaluable against the French’s towering tandem of Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert.

The visitors might be able to pull off an upset if they can sustain what they showed in Riga in the OQT.

Basketball fans of the host country have to be a bit worried about how their national basketball team has been playing. After an impressive 90-66 victory against Germany early this month, the French went 0-4 leading into the Olympics.

They lost in the rematch with Germany (70-65), before wilting against Nikola Jokic and Serbia (79-67). Les Bleus couldn’t solve the Canadians, losing 85-73 and coming up short against the Aussies (83-82).

Coach Vincent Collet told reporters after the loss to the Aussies his team would be fine. Their home fans will be closely watching if they can deliver at home.

Brazil vs. France: Prediction

The Selecao have nothing to lose against the fancied French. Bruno Caboclo dominated the competition in Riga but will be going up against Rudy Gobert and Victor Wembanyama. He will need help to keep the hosts from dominating the glass and the game.

Wembanyama is considered to be the next biggest thing in basketball. This will be his chance to show the world what he can do on basketball’s biggest stage. The French are likely to open their Olympic campaign with a win.
