Cade Cunningham is an American professional basketball player currently playing for the Detroit Pistons of the NBA. Cunningham was born in Arlington, Texas, and in his early life, played American football as a quarterback. Cunningham credits playing football as a major reason why he became such a good passer on the basketball court.

Cunningham attended Bowie High School in Arlington where he became the star of his varsity team and was the highlight attraction, very early into his freshman season. Cunningham averaged 15.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3 assists helping Bowie reach the District 6A Region 1 final. In his sophomore season, Cunningham upped his scoring, averaging 18.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game.

In his junior season, Cunningham transferred to Montverde Academy as he felt like it would be better for his career, and help in attracting a lot of college scouts. He averaged 25.1 points, 6.6. Rebounds, and 5.2 assists in his junior year. For his senior season in Montverde, Cunningham had more five-star recruits on his team so his scoring dropped. He averaged 13.9 points, 6.4 assists, and 4.2 rebounds while leading his high school to a perfect 25-0 record. Cunningham was a five-star recruit and was approached by multiple colleges. In the end, Cunningham committed to Oklahoma State.

Cunningham had a successful college career, averaging 20.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists while leading Oklahoma State to the best record in his conference. In the NCAA tournament, however, the Oklahoma Sooners were eliminated in the Elite Eight. After his freshman season, Cunningham announced his participation in the 2021 NBA draft.

Cade Cunningham’s rookie season

Cade Cunningham was drafted by the Detroit Pistons with the first overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft. He was an extremely hyped draft pick and people were anxious to see how he was going to perform. Cunningham had a slow start to his rookie season (2021-22 season), not having a field goal percentage over 40% and having multiple subpar games. Soon, however, he caught up with the physicality and the added pressure of the NBA and started to flourish. He finished his rookie season averaging 17.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.6 assists and became the first rookie to average those numbers since Tyreke Evans. All in all, Cunningham played 64 games in his rookie season and finished third in the Rookie of the Year voting behind Scottie Barnes and Evan Mobley.

His performance further improved in the 2022-23 season, where he averaged 19.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game in 12 games, after which he had to undergo a season-ending surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left shin
