He attended Davie County High School in Mocksville, North Carolina, and later transferred to Oak Hill Academy in Mocksville, North Carolina. He then attended North Carolina State University with his twin brother Cody Martin from 2014 to 2016. The pair then transferred to the University of Nevada in 2016 and finished college in 2019 before declaring for the NBA Draft.

Martin went undrafted in the 2019 NBA draft but later signed with the Charlotte Hornets on July 31, 2019. He averaged 6.2 points, 1.3 assists, and 2.1 rebounds per game in his rookie season, playing 18 games. In 2021, Martin signed with the Miami Heat and proved himself in the 2023 NBA Playoffs as part of a deep bench to help the team reach the playoffs. He averaged a career-best 10.0 points, 2.2 assists, and 4.4 rebounds per game in the 2023-24 season. Martin averaged 19.3 points and 6.4 rebounds in the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals. He finished just one vote behind his teammate and ECF Most Valuable Player, Jimmy Butler.
