He wanted to move back to Nigeria but was discouraged by his father, Akpan Ebong Bassey, who understood the opportunity they had been presented with and wanted to make the most of it. He was selected by the Philadelphia 76ers and joined them for the 2021 Summer League, but he was waived by the 76ers and signed a two-way contract with the Spurs and has been promoted to a normal contract.

At age 14 he moved to the United States, where he joined Western Kentucky University, and averaged 15.9 points, 2.6 blocks and 10.5 rebounds per game throughout college. He then declared for the 2021 NBA Draft, where he was selected 53rd overall in the second round of the Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers.
