He attended Westlake High School in Atlanta where he won a Class 6A State Championship and scored 13 points in a 68-58 win over Pebblebrook High School. He was subsequently named Mr. Georgia Basketball and averaged 24.4 points, 15 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game in his senior season. He became a consensus four-star recruit and was ranked in the Top 50 in his class by some scouts. After high school, he joined Auburn University and averaged 7.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in his freshman season. In his sophomore season, he averaged 12 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game and started in all 38 games for the Tigers. He later got injured and missed the rest of the tournament as a result.
